Old pubs, new digs
Inhabitants of Pyrmont in the 1850s didn’t have to go far to find a watering hole: the suburb was home to 26 hotels and pubs, with one on almost every street corner. Back then, pubs were patronised by locals from a particular enterprise - abattoir workers would frequent the Butchers’ Arms, quarry workers were regulars at the Quarrymen’s Arms, and wool buyers and workers would congregate at the Woolbrokers’ Arms.
While many are no longer in operation, one has stood the test of time as the oldest in the area. Opened as the Pyrmont Hotel on Christmas Eve 1841, the now Terminus Hotel at 61 Harris Street is one of the oldest pubs in Sydney, and recently underwent a grand restoration.
Worth a visit

2. Order your favourite brew at our Wayfarer’s Bar and Cafe as take away. It can accompany you as you wander across Pyrmont Bridge into the city.
3. Soak up the vibes at Quick Brown Fox Eatery with indoor and outdoor seating, serving up Single O coffee and Tea Craft teas alongside their all-day dining menu.

A peek into the past...
Days gone by
Pyrmont has a rich history, home to some of Australia’s oldest pubs and once covered in lush native flora, now depicted in artworks throughout the hotel.
The land on the peninsula has changed hands many times throughout history. At one time in the late 1700s, a quarter of the suburb was sold to the famed wool industry pioneer, Captain John Macarther.
How much did he buy it for?
A gallon of rum.
A brief history
Pre 1800
Before European settlement, the Eora tribe of Indigenous Australians inhabited this area, originally known as ‘Pirrama’.

1800
The discovery of a natural mineral spring by European settlers led to the area being renamed as Pyrmont after a spa town in Germany called Bad Pyrmont. The spring later became known as Tinker’s Well.

1857
The impressive Pyrmont Bridge was built, connecting Pyrmont to the city. A larger bridge with a swinging span opened in 1902.

1938
Our Art Deco-style building rose up as a cereal storage building, surrounded by the working wharves and busy sandstone quarries of Pyrmont.

1966
The famous Sydney Fish Markets was set up in Blackwattle Bay.

1995
After opening in the 1870s, Pyrmont’s famous CSR sugar refinery closed. The original buildings are now occupied by waterfront residential properties.

2010
Beautiful Pirrama Park opened on the former site of the Water Police base, as a 18-hectare waterside green space featuring cafes, barbeque facilities and a fantastic kids playground.

2021
After 18 months of construction, Aiden Darling Harbour opened as Sydney’s newest luxury boutique hotel.
